What is backcourt violation?

A backcourt violation occurs when an offensive player, after having crossed the mid-court line into the frontcourt, then returns to the backcourt while in possession of the ball. This rule is in place to maintain the flow of the game and to prevent teams from unnecessarily stalling or creating an advantage by moving the ball back and forth across the midline.
